Ellen Miller

Those who know her are likely to refer to Ellen Miller as the nicest person in the world. The 48-year-old has lived in Vail for 15 years. She coaches athletes of all levels, including national racing teams. She is a regular competitor herself. Rarely does a week go by that you won't catch her doing some form of race or other, be it a local mountain bike race or a marathon up a 14,000-foot peak. Her long list of achievements includes her status as the only North American woman to have summitted Mt. Everest from both the North and South approaches.
Read about her thoughts on Vail below and visit her Website here.

Q:
What do you feel sets this area and community apart from any other place?
A: I love the altitude - high enough for effective, hard training, low enough
to recover - and the sheer beauty of Vail. I particularly value the
athletic community here. There are world-class athletes throughout our
town, but they are so incredibly humble, polite and gracious.

Q: What is your proudest achievement?
A: Being named "Sportswoman of Colorado 2002." There are SO many amazing female athletes in Colorado, that it was a very special and meaningful honor for me to be selected.

Q: What do you view as your role in this valley? How do you contribute to the area's character?
A: As well as enjoying welcoming visitors to our home/resort, I view my role as that of a humble community member. Goodwill ambassador? That's the magic of Vail....there are many extraordinary people here in the Valley. They don't tout their achievements, as a matter of fact, you would never really know much about them because they are so down-to-earth and friendly. My favorite thing to do is to be supportive of the younger female athletes here in the Vail Valley...and through coaching, helping them to achieve their dreams, whether it's finishing their first 5K race or climbing Mt.Everest.

Q: Do you have any rule to live by?
A: Life is too serious to take seriously, so never forget how to play!

Q: Anything you've chanted during one of your Everest ascents or on a trail
when the going gets tough?
A: Focus, focus, focus!!!

Don't Forget Your Stick

It's Fourth of July weekend in Vail - probably the busiest time all summer. But, why are so many people wandering around town carrying lacrosse sticks?

Fourth Of July 2006

Plum will once again be covering Vail's Fourth of July parade live from The Red Lion, but before this year's festivities catch last year's coverage of Fourth of July events throughout the Valley, including the parade, Avon Fireworks and the Minturn Senior Drill Team.

Mountain Bike Racing is Cool

Like most ski towns, Vail is home to its own mountain bike race series, frequented by the area's devout crew of fat-tire fanatics.

Davos Dash 2007

How does sprinting up a steep hill on a mountain bike for four miles sound? Fun? Maybe not ... but satisfying. Check out pix from the 2007 Davos Dash race, the third installment of the Vail race series.

Hot Summer Nights: The Wailers

The Wailers kicked off the summer at the first 2007 Bud Light Hot Summer Nights concert. The weather was beautiful, the Ford Amphitheater was packed and the music was jammin'!

Congo Square Stirs Crowd

A packed Ford Amphitheater sat spellbound on June 24 in the harmonious contrast of jazz and tribal rhythms as Wynton Marsalis' orchestra and Ghanaian percussion master Yacub Addy's ensemble, Odadaa, melded forces.

The performance kicked off the Bravo! Vail Music Festival's 20th season in unconventional fashion. On one side of the stage was the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in deep concentration with intricate direction from Marsalis, who would occasionally sneak into the back row and take up the trumpet. On the other side was Addy with Odadaa floating and grooving in brightly colored African robes calling out choruses and thumping out lightening fast beats on bongos and earthy chimes.

Marsalis and Addy co-wrote the performance, called Congo Square after the district in New Orleans where African musicians were known to gather and perform for themselves and passer-bys in the late 1700s.

When the two sounds - the polished jazz and the raw percussion- met in monumental moments of harmonious fusion, the audience broke out in applause mid-song throughout the show.

Such is magic of sound at the Bravo! Music Festival. For other recommended performances, check out our Bravo! highlight preview package here.

DOs and DONTs of Trail Running

After slogging my way through the local trail running series' 10K at 10,000 feet on June 24, I thought I'd throw a list of guidelines together for fellow unseasoned runners. The Teva Series, operated by the Vail Recreation District, is a fantastic way to bond with other health-minded individuals, get your heart rate up, and get a new perspective of Vail's world-class trails and views.

Unsurprisingly, Bernie Boettcher nailed the fastest time in the 10,000-foot race (which began at the top of the gondola on Vail Mountain), finishing in 43 minutes and 2 seconds. Cindy O-Neill was the fastest woman, jetting through the breathtaking (both literally and in terms of scenery) course in 51:15. Yeah ... a lot of these people know what they're doing.

Here are a few nuggets of wisdom I gained from my trail-racing experience.

Mmm... Summer Cocktail Recipe

Author, cook and recipe developer Adeena Sussman graced The MorningNoon&Night Show June 23 and whipped up one of her refreshing summer drinks – an herbal cucumber gin elixir.

Auntie Em ... Kansas is Coming

There's nothing like a classic rock trip back down memory lane ... especially if it involves Kansas. No, we don't want you to take a trip to Kansas. We're recommending you skedaddle over to Beaver Creek this weekend to see Kansas the band - you know, "Dust in the Wind," "Carry on Wayward Son" ... the booming arena rock act from the 1970s - play for free.

Not only will some of Beaver Creek's finest chefs whip up delights of all varieties Saturday and Sunday, but the resort's plaza transforms into a festival venue of sorts with the June Jam.

Kick Up Some Dirt

If you think running on streets and sidewalks is a good time, you'll never want to see asphalt again after getting a taste of the Teva Trail Running Series.
