Brrrrrrrrr!

Well, that didn't take long. It seemed like only a week ago we were in T-shirts, keg bowling in one of the Valley's many Oktoberfest celebrations. Now the leaves have turned a golden delicious yellow and the temperature has taken a nosedive. Seriously, don't go outside with out a fleece.

But then again, why go outside at all? The mountain's not open yet. We suggest you stay close to the soft, warm glow of Channel 16. Sure it may be "off-season", but Plum is always on. We've got Vail Homepage fresh daily, with updated weather throughout the day and the best coverage of local happenings. Also, be sure to check out our fantastic summer coverage, including interviews with Lez Zeppelin, Matisyahu and The Wailers as well as coverage of Bravo! and the 2007 Teva Mountain Games.

Hot off the presses this week?
-A new This Week in the Valley, a roundup of the week's events with Jeniece Pettitt.
-A spotlight on lead singer Peter Lewis of Storytyme. The Boulder-based band of brothers has played Plum's morning show before and will be rocking the stage at Sandbar this Saturday.
-A new Alpine Bank Game of the Week featuring BMHS Football vs. Glenwood Springs

Keep it tuned to Plum Channel 16. We'll chase the cold away with warm memories of summer and new content as crisp as the October air.

Colorado Ski Areas Blowing Snow

Guess what? The mountains aren't open yet, but as far as Colorado ski areas are concerned, the snow season has begun.

Fruit of the Land

As many of you have probably noticed, the Vail Valley is home to many edible plants, many of which, like the rest of the alpine foliage around here, is now in a stage of fall transformation.

Vail Opening Day: The Waiting Game

Vail Opening Day: November 16, 2007
We're a mere month away from the opening of Vail Mountain. It's weird to say, I know, and we've got the turning of the leaves and Halloween to contend with before we get there, but still that hallowed day looms. I'm not sure what made me come to this realization. I don't think it was the date. I think it's the frost I noticed this morning on tips of grass blades. And the fact that I had to give my car the classic 10-minute winter warm-up. Whatever the cause, the idea has firmly lodged itself in my skull and I find myself excited, but impatient.

Plum on the Big Screen

Plum means movies. We say it often but maybe you didn’t know how serious we are. Let’s steer the lens, for example, onto Martha’s Vineyard, where Plum has become a major sponsor of the island’s International Film Festival.

Hand Over the Mic

Tis' not the season for national rock acts to breeze into Vail, but for those itching to hear – or play – live music, open mic night is a worthy alternative.
Loaded Joe's in Avon, Mango's Mountain Grill in Red Cliff and The Sandbar in West Vail all host open mics and while the pickings vary from week to week, there are certainly a pack of devout regulars at each venue and a surprising level of local (and transient) talent.
The beauty of open mic is that you never know what’s in store. You’ll get everything from a trio of hippies knocking out a series of bongo-laden Grateful Dead covers to singer-songwriters delivering irreverent, catchy originals.
At times, the stage can transform into a full-on rock jam, replete with a random cowboy riding the drum kit, impromptu bassist eyeing the right frets and a wall of guitarists honing their teamwork.

Mango’s Open Mic Thursdays:
If you haven’t made the trip to Red Cliff, it’s high time you do. Drive up Battle Mountain beyond Minturn and make sure to cut yourself off or bring a designated driver. The event is hosted by Sexy Leo and coinciding with $2 fish tacos (they’re awesome). It’s BYOI (Bring Your Own Instrument); Amps and sound are provided for open mic beginning at 8 p.m.; 970-827-9109.

Brat Party

Like a lovingly prepared brat, Vail finds itself “sandwiched” between two weekends of Oktoberfest celebrations. This past weekend, the festivities went down in Lionshead, and this upcoming weekend (Sept. 14-16) the Oktoberfestivities will go down in Vail Village. The great thing about Vail Oktoberfest, which separates the celebration from any other in the Valley and perhaps beyond, is the blending of Old World Oktoberfest traditions and contemporary, creative competitions. Some may say unorthodox competitions, but we prefer innovative.

Mountain Tip: Stance

C.J. from The Board Room in Avon shows us how to maintain the proper board stance for any type of riding you may do in the park or the street.

The Guns are Out

Big game hunting season ... It sounds so foreboding to trail enthusiasts.
It's only natural to enter the forest, see the "hunting season in progress" signs and immediately wonder, "Do I look like big game? Should I sing loudly? Should I wear a big, orange DON'T SHOOT sign or dress up as the birthday clown?"

Best of Summer

Slow to come, quick to go. It's almost like we blinked and missed the summer. It's definitely something to cherish while it lasts in the High Country, and we'd like to help you with that on Plum, where you can reminisce with all the season's highlights. We've got clips of everything you loved and want to remember most from this summer in Vail: The 2007 Teva Mountain Games, International Dance Festival, Bravo! You name it.

Also tune into Channel 16 for exciting segs from our sister markets, including the Aspen Ideas Festival and the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival.

Last but not least, the reel featuring Plum’s first photo contest is in heavy rotation on the ol' tube, so tune in and kick back for the fall.

And the winners are…

The polls are closed, the votes have been tallied and the winners are…well, you’ll just have to wait a few more hours.

Plum’s first photo contest has been a rousing success, greater than we could have hoped with over twenty contestants and hundreds of voters! But it isn’t officially over until we announce the winners, which we will do LIVE tomorrow Monday, Sept 3 on Vail Homepage at 8 a.m. We’ve been itching to give away these fantastic prizes, and the winners certainly deserve them with the tremendous feedback their photos have been able to generate in our comments section. So, make sure you tune in bright and early to see who won these amazing gifts:

*$400 half-day fishing trip for two from Gorsuch Outfitters
* Two day passes to the newly renovated Allegria Spa at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek as well as a yummy brunch
* $100 gift certificate at The Dusty Boot in Beaver Creek

Remember: Photo contest winners announced LIVE on Plum Channel 16 Monday, Sept 3 at 8 a.m. If you miss Vail Homepage, the show will replay at 11 a.m. and, of course, we’ll have the winners listed here by mid-morning.
