Spring Sales Around Vail

Spring Sales in Vail
If you’ve had your eye on a certain pair of skis, boots or parka, but felt your pocketbook couldn’t take the sting, now is a good time to revisit your winter wish list.

Sure, your days of using new winter gear may be numbered, but there is still snow falling, and the bargains are out.

With the ski season wrapping up, local shops are unloading their winter goods and you’re likely to find the outerwear you’ve been coveting all season for half-price.

Skis, boards, gloves, hats, boots, jackets, pants and “Vail” branded sweatshirts are all on sale as shops prepare to trade out their inventory for summer wear and warm-weather equipment. Many shops are also unloading their rental and demo gear on the cheap, so if you truly loved a board or a pair of skis you tried earlier this season, you just might be able to finish off the season on them and get them dialed in for next year.

Places to find deals in Vail include Buzz’s, Patagonia, Quicksilver, Roxy, Billabong and Vail Sports, to name just a few. For a comprehensive list of shops of every ilk throughout the valley, check out our shopping guide.

Lionshead's New Look

Inside Vail Square
Where are we? Innsbruck? St. Moritz? Oh yes … We’re here in the new Lionshead at Vail Square. This isn’t anything like the Lionshead we’ve ever known. Lionshead was formerly that less aesthetically pleasing end of Vail characterized by a handful of classy, yet not architecturally pleasing, shoebox shops and restaurants.

This winter, Lionshead has undergone a major transformation. Rock Resorts completed its grand new hotel – The Arrabelle, featuring luxury rooms with 24-hour butler service and multi-million-dollar residences.

The hotel is wrapped around a village, chalk full of eateries ranging from fancy French fine dining (Centre V) to a brand new Blue Moose pizzeria. New clothing stores include the high-end European-like Avalon to outdoor favorites Burton and Patagonia, plus a Vail Chophouse, a mini ice rink, a Starbucks (of course), and our personal favorite, Rimini. Rimini makes gourmet gelato of every mouth-watering flavor, home-made hot chocolate and panini and is an outlet for the finest chocolates (including gelato truffles) and wines.

Big Beers, Belgians and Barleywines

Some say beer is the new wine. Plum learned a number of fascinating tidbits about beer and other malty treats at the Eighth annual Big Beers, Belgians and Barleywines festival at the Vail Marriott in January 2008.

Gifts for Your Gearhead

Oh, would you look at that ... the holidays are right around the corner. If you're like us, you likely didn't get around to finishing your gift shopping in October like you promised you'd do last season, when you were too busy shredding fresh powder that you forgot it was the time of year when you need to, you know, think about other people.

What better gifts than all the outdoor equipment that will help (but not guarantee) your friends and family keep up with you on the slopes this winter. It may be just under the wire to arrive before Christmas, but for great gear gift deals, visit steepandcheap.com or sierratradingpost.com.

Secret of Keely: Keely Fine Foods

Keely Fine Foods
970-328-5655
www.keelyfinefoods.com

Shopping for food has recently become a gourmet experience, thanks to Keely Fine Foods. Started by long-time valley locals Tami and Mike Duncan, www.keelyfinefoods.com is a one-stop shop for everything from organic meats to gift baskets.

Wanting a positive focus to help them keep from worrying about their daughter, Keely, who recently finished serving in Iraq, The Duncans set out to provide Vail residents and visitors with an outlet to purchase gourmet foods and baked goods unavailable at local grocery stores. All of Keely's products can be delivered to your door on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday.

A Candy Plaza for Antique Lovers

There's something unquestionably intriguing about the bindings on a pair of 60-year-old wooden skis. Serious antique connoisseurs will likely be lost in awe at the Rocky Mountain Antique Festival at Beaver Creek, July 27-29, but the typical passerby is also likely to be sucked in by the allure of some of the artifacts.

Antique vendors from throughout the country convene in Beaver Creek Village to display their carefully maintained collections of furniture, jewelry, artwork, Western relics and ski memorabilia.

Naturally, mountain-themed antiques will be well represented by the likes of Ski Country Antiques from Evergreen and by local outfits The Englishman in Vail and Parsons Ventures, Inc. in Edwards. The festival also features rare items from far away places, such as Tennessee's European Restorations or Glenwood Springs' Eastern Elements.

Mingling the Minturn Market

If you don't spend a lot of time in Minturn, you need to. The best time to visit is between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on a summer Saturday to catch the Minturn Market. Giant turkey legs and belly dancers abound.
