There were people dressed as trees and snow queens, a fire dancer, a chocolate fondue station and free massages.
Talk about a classy beginning.
The Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa - the 19-acre facility that has taken over a large chunk of Avon and houses the gondola that leads to Beaver Creek, celebrated its official grand opening on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008.
Rather than red carpets, the Westin went green ... lining its lobby and valet area with strips of real grass, signifying the resort's commitment to environmental building.
You see, the roof of the resort is made of recycled tires, at least half of the $500-million facility's construction waste was recycled, there are recycling stations on every floor of the hotel and VIP parking spaces for hybrid vehicles. Because of these efforts, the Westin may become the first high-end resort in Colorado to earn a LEED certificate from the Leaders in Energy and Environmental Design.
Green techniques aside, hundreds of grand opening revelers struck gold with Friday's party, which came replete with a dance floor fueled by the fiery vocals of Hazel Miller, free chair and face massages in the Westin's 23,000-square-foot Anjali Spa and plenty of free cocktails and snacks, including a martini luge, outside of the hotel's swank Avondale restaurant.
Gold stars for grand openings, Westin!
