Dan Aguilar

Shauna Farnell

More than 30 years of conducting avalanche rescues has taught Dan Aguilar many things, but one particular epiphany has stayed with him.
“Living dangerously catches up with you,” he says.

A Vail resident since 1972, Aguilar had originally planned to do the ski-bum experience for a couple years before moving on. But, like so many long-time locals, he was seduced by the area’s beauty and recreational opportunities.
A solo winter trek through the Gore Range that nearly turned disastrous piqued his interest in mountaineering and Aguilar joined Vail Mountain Rescue in 1980.

Throughout his years of service, Aguilar has earned several exclusive awards for his courage and competence. He has even been invited to Mount Everest for rescue and guidance operations. In 1995, Aguilar began teaching avalanche safety classes at Colorado Mountain College.
Although most avalanche rescues are, Aguilar tells us, body retrieval expeditions, Aquilar feels his instruction has had a hand in preventing additional fatal accidents on the mountain, and he finds it rewarding to educate and comfort survivors of deadly slides.

Of all the expertise he has gained through his experience and research, Aguilar points out the stark fundamentals involved in backcountry safety.
“When you go out there, go out prepared,” he says. “Two things have kept me in the game: not going alone and not being afraid to turn back.”
Aguilar doesn’t see an end to his community service anywhere on the horizon. As long as he can walk, he plans to rescue.

“I hope to continue with Mountain Rescue for a long time,” he says. “If I’m still able to carry the heavy pack, I will.”
