Vail

Don't Forget Your Stick

John Elliot

It's Fourth of July weekend in Vail - probably the busiest time all summer. But, why are so many people wandering around town carrying lacrosse sticks?Well, for about 28 years, this time of year has served as something akin to a holiday for the Vail Lacrosse Shootout, which, in this lifespan, has grown to be one of the largest lacrosse tournaments in the world. For 2007, the tourney is home to 60 men's teams and 30 women's teams, all of whom compete throughout the valley - on fields between Vail and Edwards - from June 27 through July 4. This amounts to roughly 2,000 individuals in Vail sporting some level of passion for that most refined, Native American-born competition.Independence Day serves as the culmination of talent, with the men's and women's elite final games at Ford Park in Vail (women at 12:30 p.m., men at 2:30 p.m.). Ten years ago, it was not uncommon for the run-of-the-mill Vail summer visitor to stop a lacrosse player on the street and inquire as to the nature of the peculiar stick he or she was carrying. Was it an aerodynamic butterfly net? A fishing device? These days, tournament participants aren't usually subjected to such lines of questioning. The Vail Shootout has helped put the sport of lacrosse on the map in Colorado and Vail is well-established in the eyes of lacrosse players worldwide as a hub for their sport. For a tournament schedule, locations and team information, visit the Shootout Website here.by Shauna Farnell
