Vail

Fresh off the Farm

The fruit of the Colorado High Country - not to mention the talent - is all laid out on the table at the Vail Farmer's Market. Well, it's actually presented neatly in 100 or more little tents lining Meadow Drive.

What a shame that so many locals and visitors have no idea what delicacies our area has to offer. Rather than encountering them by chance in shops or by word of mouth, you can bite right into a farm-fresh Colorado peach (seriously, they're the best you'll ever have), sip a sweet Riesling from Palisade or buy your furry buddy a homemade dog treat. The assortment also branches into hand-crafted soap, vinegar and olive oil, coffee, ice cream, salsas, maple syrup and yes ... chocolate. Not to mention the array of local artists who, just days before sat with their easels in a field of wildflowers completing a colorful rendition of the Gore Range or put the final touches on a rustic wooden rocking chair.

The market brings a whole new ambiance to Vail Village every Sunday and you'll be hard-pressed to find fresher goods or more authentic artwork anywhere in the valley. The Vail Farmer's Market runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 15 to mid-September every Sunday.

The Edwards and Minturn markets have an equally enticing collection of goods, including wild Alaskan fish, Colorado veal and elk meat and artisan cheeses. The dog-friendly Edwards Market, found on the corner across from the Riverwalk, runs Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. through September.

The Minturn Market, where you'll find yet another exclusive barrage of fresh food, sauces and spices plus live music and opportunities for a caricature rendition of your mug, runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays beginning June 14.

If you don't spend a lot of time in Minturn, you need to. The best time to visit is between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on a summer Saturday to catch the Minturn Market. Giant turkey legs and belly dancers abound.
