Vail

A Look Back...

John Elliot

What a wonderful, action-packed summer we’ve had in the Valley. As we head into the final days of the season, join us as we look back over the many events that occupied Vail’s summer 2007.The summer sports season kicked off with the biggest annual outdoor competition in the U.S.: The Teva Mountain Games. Each year the Mountain Games grow bigger and better and this year was no exception with Floyd Landis on hand to compete and the addition of a new crowd favorite, the Purina Diving Dog Challenge. While Teva may have been the biggest of this summer’s events it was by no means the last. Summer ’07 gave us the ever-popular Vail Lacrosse Shootout, the exhausting, 100-mile Colorado-Eagle River Ride bike race, and the even more exhausting Leadville 100, a 100-mile super marathon. Not to mention the 36th annual Dillon Open, the highest regatta race in the world, and the toughest water-bound competition, the Rotary Club Rubber Duckie Race. And the season’s not even over yet! We still can look forward to the Jeep King of the Mountain mountain bike series this weekend at Beaver Creek. Check out last year’s highlights here. Before you go thinking that this summer was just some jock-ish paradise (it was for sure), remember that summer in the Valley is home to some of the greatest cultural events in the world. The Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary with its most ambitious schedule to date, featuring the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic and the legendary Judy Collins. The Vail International Dance Festival returned with a new artistic director, Damian Woetzel, who brought the incomparable Savion Glover and the multi-talented Peter Boal’s Pacific Northwest Dance Company to the Valley. Also, the ever-popular free concert series Bud Light Hot Summer Nights returned with a string of great performances from The Wailers to Steve Azar and Lez Zeppelin. Vail Symposium did its part, as always, to bring culture to the Valley this summer, from drinks with mixologist/chef Adeena Sussman to lectures from Still Museum director Dean Sobel and Emmy award-winning journalists Deanna Lee and Judy Muller.
