No sooner do Labor Day crowds make their mass exodus and crickets launch into their latest masterpieces that Vail morphs into a full-on construction zone. That’s right, while the off season, especially in the fall, comes with many lovely and not-so-obvious bonuses, things get a little slow around here and paving/construction operations spring up like dirty laundry. A little patience is required for the next couple of months when traveling through Vail, as traffic is a bit hampered in some areas, most notably Dowd Junction on Interstate 70, Vail Road, Forest Rd., Meadow Dr. and throughout various East and West Vail neighborhoods.
If traveling through town on a bike, the projects lend an extra element of excitement not unlike Paperboy. Remember? That arcade game in which you had to pedal around avoiding reversing dump trucks, snarling dogs, uncovered manholes and oblivious motorists? Anyway, just be careful, regardless of your mode of transport. Be prepared to stop, slow down, take detours and add a couple of minutes to your travel time.
But don’t forget what pleasant amenities we have to look forward to this off season: Fall colors, half-priced dinner deals; the most beautiful mountain biking and hiking all year...
